On this page you can find out a little about the people who run Orbital. The society is run by students for students and has a democratically elected committee, elections usually taking place just before the Easter holidays every year.
Feel free to contact any of the committee with any questions you have or to let us know if you need some advice or are having any problems. If there is something we don't know we will always be able to put you in contact with someone who does!
Similarly always feel free to get in touch if you have any good ideas on new events or activities you would like Orbital to get involved in. As long as it is legal we would love to hear about it!
The Committee for 2009-2010:
President: Thomas Vie ~ Makes sure things get done on time
- Email: orbital-president@bristol.ac.uk
- About Me: Hello there! Congratulations on deciding to join us here at the University, you won’t regret it! With its cosmopolitan atmosphere, historic sites, bustling nightlife and huge number of green spaces Bristol has to be one of the best cities you could choose to make your home for the next 3 years. I lived in Unite House last year and loved every minute of time as a Fresher, Orbital really helping me settle in and meet people. In between playing rugby, going riding and, somewhat occasionally, actually studying, I can often be found enjoying the many pleasures the bars of Park Street have to offer, hopefully I will see you there soon!
Vice President: Ella Flemyng ~ Raises sponsourship and helps out
- Email: orbital-vicepresident@bristol.ac.uk
- About Me: Hey! My name's Ella Flemyng, and I'm Orbital's Vice President. I'm studying Biological Sciences, and just moving into my second year. Bristol is such a cool little city with some amazing nights out. Even after a year you'll still be finding new places to go! As well as studying and socialising I'm also on the Women's Rugby Team. It's so much fun, keeps you fit, and all the other girls are great! I spent my first year living in private accommodation and looking back I wouldn't have had it any other way! You have tons of independence and freedom and you're so much closer to the city than those in halls.
Secretary: Cristina Faro ~ Takes minutes and deals with enquiries, complaints and admin
- Email: orbital-secretary@bristol.ac.uk
- About Me: Hello freshers! My name’s Cristina and I’m your Orbital secretary. Basically, I deal with signing you all up to join our lovely organisation, sorting out official documents and taking minutes of committee meetings. I also deal with complaints and queries so if there’s anything Orbital related you’re dying to know, or if you’ve got any bright ideas about events you’d like us to sort out, or if you’ve just got beef – I’m your girl. Get involved, guys, ‘cus you only get one sweet year of being a fresher so you might as well make the most of it!!!
Treasurer: Kathy Ecsy ~ Keeps an eye on your money
- Email: orbital-treasurer@bristol.ac.uk
- About Me: Hey! I'm Kathy, this year's Orbital treasurer. I'm here to make sure the money you paid to join Orbital was well invested :). Though you probably won't need much convincing after your first night! I'm in my second year studying Neuroscience and absolutely loving Bristol! I love to party but also love to do things during the day time! So if you want to know about some great student deals don't hesitate to ask me :). I hope you'll remember Freshers' Week as one of the best weeks of your lives!
Ents Rep: Graeme Reeves ~ In charge of making sure you have the best year of your life
- Email: orbital-events@bristol.ac.uk
- About Me: Hi I'm Graeme, one of your social secretaries for the year ahead. I'm back in my first year like all you guys having taken advantage of Bristol's diverse nightlife a bit too much last year. We've got some great nights out for you during Fresher's week and regular nights lined up throughout the year. I look forward to welcoming you all to Bristol in September.
Ents Rep: Matt Jones ~ In charge of making sure you have the best year of your life

- About Me: Congrats on all getting to Bristol and glad that you can be a part of Orbital. My name's Matt and as one of the infamous duo of social secs, it's my job to make sure you guys get the best entertainment, during freshers fortnight, and throughout the year. We have lots lined up for you; it's going to be an amazing year! Just a little bit about me: I love going out (probably a bit too much), get on with anyone and just enjoy having a good time. I was in private accommodation last year and Orbital really was great to us last year so hopefully we can do even better this year. Looking forward to the most amazing year!
Sports Rep: Ian Sperring ~ Organises intramural sport events
- Email: orbital-sport@bristol.ac.uk
- About Me: Hey I’m Ian, better known to all as Spez. I’m from Leigh-on-Sea in Essex, study Engineering Maths and lived in Northwell last year (which is the drunkest student house incidentally). Love my sport, used to do football, athletics, hockey, tennis and badminton all fairly seriously but now cut it down to just rugby, basketball and cricket. I had such a great time in Orbital last year, especially with the rugby team and I can highly recommend getting involved in everything Orbital, definitely sports!!
Sports Rep: Rory Jones ~ Organises intramural sport events
- Email: orbital-sport@bristol.ac.uk
- About Me: Hi my names Rory. I’m studying animal behaviour and welfare, I was at Northwell house last year, the best place to be a fresher. I loved what orbital did for me and everyone else last year and you’re going to love it as well. The best bit for me was obviously the sport especially the rugby and I loved every bit of it, you really do get out what you put in as I found out on my first social. It really is all about taking part, get stuck in and you’ll have an incredible first year.

- Email: orbital-publicity@bristol.ac.uk
- About Me:Hi everyone! I'm Hannah, I study Drama and French and last year I lived in The Hawthorns. As Publicity Officer I'm going to be making sure you know about all the fun stuff we're planning for you. I look forward to making your acquaintance at Freshers' Week!
Charity Officer: Helen Ainsworth ~ Organises all of Orbital's Charity events
- Email: orbital-charity@bristol.ac.uk
- About Me: Hi, I’m Helen, I’m studying French and German and I am responsible for the fundraising and charity side of Orbital. I was a RAG rep for Orbital last year and have always enjoyed charity work. I love going out with my friends and having a laugh. I had a fantastic first year at Uni thanks to Orbital and am really looking forward to making sure that all this year’s Fresher’s have as good a first year as I did.
Webmistress: Elizabeth Attfield ~ Looks after the website
- Email: orbital-website@bristol.ac.uk
- About Me:Being Webmistress I doubt I will have much to do with you in an official capacity. But if Freshers’ Week is anything like last year, then I’m sure I’ll be meeting most of you if not all of you at the amazing events the boys have been organising for you. I know the first year of university is scary but it can also be the most amazing time. So make sure you go out there and meet all the nervous new people like you! If at any point during the year you have any problems or ideas about the site, please do not hesitate to let me know. Have a fab year and take loads of photos! (It will make remembering a bit easier.)
